4. Fitness program presentation by Tom Webster. Tom Webster is the President of Webster Fitness Products, Inc. of McMurray, PA.
5. Presentation by Chuck Gojmerac of Central. A total of 42 schools participated in this survey. This represents a good cross-section of District V and VI. A reminder to schools to use this as a tool in helping determine a fair amount of pay for your officials. Take into consideration geographical situations and athletic budget limitations of your school.
6. T.J. Kakabar presentation of basketball playoffs. Packets went out earlier in the week. We are trying for a paperless tournament entry this year. If you did not receive the packets from T.J., please see him immediately. Dates correspond with last year, except 6 days forward due to the start of the basketball season 6 days later. Last year 22 applications had errors. Using the on-line form, it will be easier to correct any of these errors. One highlight, the form will automatically calculate your points for standings. Championship site of Saint Francis is not available due to SFU hosting the NEC Women’s championships on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of our proposed championships. T.J. is checking with gym availability of UPJ. T.J. also thanked State College with their help in hosting the championships in the past and may call on their assistance again. Huntingdon asked a question about paying the entry fee. OK to send check after schools are sure they are entering - but it must be received before the tournament begins. Bellwood-Antis asked if the official’s recommendations are actually reviewed. T.J. assured us that Mike Hudak does review the sheets that are submitted. There is a point system used that carries over from year to year. Ticket prices are still $6 and $3. Student tickets are pre-sale only at the price of $3. All tickets at the door are $6.
7. Don Hosterman passed out a packet for every school that sponsors wrestling. Team duals is very tight in AA and AAA. Thursday the 28th at noon is the last match that counts. Report scores to Mr. Vetock. Hosterman will let you know by Saturday when and where you wrestle. AA will be difficult this year due to time schedule. Friday at 3:30 start is projected. Five mats will be used Friday night. Going from 4 to 3 sessions due to school schedule. We will have all day Friday and Saturday next year. There is a map of the gym layout in the packets that were handed out. One of our schools only has one match entered in the system PLEASE UPDATE ALL YOUR RESULTS IMMEDIATELY. If your results are not in, your penalty might end up not being able to wrestle at Districts. Ticket Prices are $6 and $3. Students can purchase tickets for $3 at the door, as there are no presales. The gym will be cleared between sessions. AA Regionals at Johnstown and AAA Regionals at Altoona Field house.
8. Swimming - Dean Rossi is no longer the chair. The Principal at Mount Union is now the Chair. If you do not have a team, get your individuals to a pool to get some qualifying times. Packets were sent out via email. If you do not have them, call the Principal at Mount Union.
9. Old Business - John Hayes at Bellwood-Antis. Details given regarding objection to PSADA donation. Presented to the group information regarding the reimbursement from District VI football playoffs. Coach Hayes wishes that the school got a larger share of the percentage breakdown. Currently District VI keeps 40% and each of the two schools that play the game split the remaining 60% (30% each). Coach Hayes also wonders why District VI is considering play by classification if in fact our playoff system is working well. Ray Wotkowski spoke in behalf of District VI. Not everyone is happy with the status of District VI. Not the intention to throw anything down anyone’s throat. Next District VI is February 2nd. Anyone is welcome and invited to attend and present his or her thoughts to the committee. Ray feels 16 weeks is not a good option. Ray would prefer a 15-week season. Thought it was unfair that District V gets either a one-week or two-week break before jumping into the state playoffs in A and AA. John Hayes supports the AD/Hock committee if the study is for fixing this problem. Coach Hayes is opposed to the idea about a “play by classification” schedule in District VI. Ray said that expenses for District VI are going up. State dues, which District VI pays, might be going up. Ray is upset about the sportsmanship issue, in particular with boy’s soccer. Ray’s hope is that this organization takes a leadership role with promoting better sportsmanship. Extended discussion about football playoffs and a level playing field for A and AA schools with regards to private and public schools. Ray let member schools know that if you are unhappy with the situation of public and private schools playing in the PIAA playoffs together, you need to contact your local legislator. Blacklick Valley states that they remember winning record vs. non-winning record for entering districts in football. They believe it was never discussed to allow a 3-6 team into the playoffs. Ray detailed policy for the top 16 teams in A for 2009. Portage states not everyone knew it was top 16 teams in A were able to enter districts. Ray says 12 teams would be competitive for our A playoffs. Bishop Carroll said 2008 was the 1st year that we took “all 16 teams” to A playoffs. BG stated going to playoffs at 3-6 was a good decision for them. They said United got a home game in front of a full house. It was a win-win situation for both schools. Discussion will continue at the spring meeting. Go back to your coaches and ask about playing Friday nights only in playoffs and allowing 16 teams enter A playoffs (or limiting the teams in class A that only have a record of at least 4-5). BA motions that we oppose playing by classification in football, 2nd by Mount Union. Roll call voting asked for by Mount Union. 29 yes votes, 11 no and 5 abstentions. Motion passes.
10. New Business - No District VI jr. high track meet. Altoona will host a middle school 7 and 8 grader competition at Mansion Park. Altoona will run the tournament. Don Hosterman presenting information for Cross Country. Don is trying for the state to go to three classifications. This might get us more qualified students to the state competition. If this happens AAA might have to leave our district. Ray reminds us that in representing all schools, would this be good for our district? Somerset asked if this would also affect Track & Field? Don Hosterman said this might also affect Swimming & Diving. Don also commented on the Wrestling proposals. No consolation match in AAA as that team does not advance. AA’s request to have a true 2 vs. 3 match was declined at the District level. This might open up the door to all other sports that are looking to expand their tournaments.
